The key here is the idea of explicit vs. implicit voting. Digg’s votes are explicit. A digg is a digg. In Flickr, the voting is done implicitly by participating in the community. Adding a photo to your Flickr favorites, commenting on it, referencing it from your blog or article all contribute to its interestingness. This is still democratic, and perhaps more organic than the explicit process of digging content you like. However, the black box for inferring interestingness from open community interaction is sort of a paradox.
